Meet Sylvia: the designer

I began silk painting more than 20 years ago, learning basic skills in London with Tony Wigg (Hampstead Garden Suburb Institute and Hampstead School of Art) and later further techniques in the Netherlands with Ellen Bakker.
My tutors - with their enthusiasm for the creative potential of silk - encouraged me to develop my own style: bold, abstract and uplifting.
Applying experience of digitizing library catalog data, my original hand-painted designs have been scanned to offer this growing digital collection.
My interest in contemporary design was nurtured whilst working in libraries and publishing in the Netherlands.
Unwinding from demanding deadlines, checking data and editing academic manuscripts, I was drawn to 20th century Dutch art and design whose timeless, organic forms inspire my collection.
Originally sold only at craft fairs in the UK, my designs are now available as digital prints for fashion, homeware, scarves, shawls and sarongs.

Silk scarves are my 'go to accessory' for any occasion: work, casual or formal. And I'm always asked "where did you get that scarf?
